Half round gutters have dominated the roof scapes of Europe for many years, but it seems in Australia there is an increasing demand for the more aesthetically pleasing design. It is also argued that a half round gutter flushes better than a conventional quad gutter, accelerating the flow and helping keep the gutter clear of debris, particularly when the gutter is carrying a very small amount of water and a flat bottom style gutter spreads the water, running very shallow and eventually reducing flow to almost nil.
The problem has been for the industry how to manufacture the gutters efficiently. Traditional rollforming solutions work very well except they require a large capital investment to produce a single size and shape gutter. Alternatively many roofing companies produce this style of gutter on their long length folders by making many very slight bends to produce what looks like a smooth curve. This is a flexible solution, but very time consuming and therefore expensive.

The radius produced is true since it is actually rolled rather than 50 or a hundred small individual folds.
