What is an Automatic Metal Bandsaw?
An automatic metal bandsaw is a production cutting machine that performs clamping, feeding, cutting and blade return cycles without operator intervention. Unlike manual or semi-automatic band saws, fully automatic machines can complete repeated cutting sequences through programmable settings.
CNC Automatic bandsaws are ideal for:

- Repetitive bar cutting, particularly as a preliminary operation for CNC lathes and machining centres
Most automatic metal bandsaws include hydraulic clamping systems, automatic material feed systems and programmable length control. A quality automatic bandsaw can also be operated in semi-automatic mode which makes it useful for both production runs and ‘one off’ work. This is particularly helpful in fabrication shops where day to day often comprises a mix of work.
Types of Automatic Bandsaws
Horizontal AUTOMATIC BANDSAWS
Horizontal automatic bandsaws are available in pivoting or douible column configuration. They are ideal for cutting bar, tube, RHS, pipe and structural sections and packs in high volumes.

- Short parts
- Structural steel processing (provided the bar feeders have a long enough travel so multiple hitches aren’t required to reach the desired cut length).
vERTICAL aUTOMATIC bANDSAWS
Vertical bandsaws have unique characteristics compared to horizontal automatic saws. With vertical saws, the blade runs top to bottom and the head tilts to mitre instead of swinging left and right typical of a horizontal machine. This style of machine (for example a Hydmech V18APC) has advantages over its horizontal cousins.
Best for:
- When floor space is at a premium
- Shops that load their material with overhead cranes (bed is open from above)
- When cut lengths tend to be longer
- Cutting with regular mitres
- Production benefits from raft cutting.
